Runes are used to improve your characters early game capabilities. If your team has a REALLY strong early game the game is over. It's all about early game, that's why some champs imo are useless. Like Vayne. She is a GREAT late game champ but she shouldn't be given the chance to have a late game.

Yeah runes are pretty important. i play as kat and she has a weak early game but strong late game so i need as many runes\masteries as possible to be able to farm and level up. as far as strong late game champs as long as they farm enough and dont get ganked they will destroy from mid game up so they are sorta needed if you have all early game people late game will be difficult. not that its not possible just difficult.

Any tips to use Ryze with runes and items ? I like that champ a lot, seems really cool

Like others have said just google "Ryze champ guide" and solomid or some website will pop up and click on it it will have several builds and guides where different people will tell you the best way to use him. they also have ratings which lets you see which one worked most for everyone
