Title: standard military tactics... comments please?
Post by: UNCLE_VINNIE on June 02, 2012, 03:17:53 PM
i'm an old fart who spent some time in the military, and i learned a few things about tactics, some of which seem to apply well to gaming...
1) when you are being followed, circle around and ambush them that aims to ambush you (Roger's Rangers Standing Orders)
2)never use the same trail twice. if you go back to your camp, use a different route (Roger's Rangers Standing Orders, but some maps are really too small for this)
3)shoot and move, don't let the enemy figure out where you are firing from (standard Army sniper doctrine, again some maps make this difficult)
4)use cover and concealment
5)never be where the enemy expects you to be
to name just a few.....

6) Go to the other base, go to market, than go trough alley, go back to market, hide behind bench and camp.
Just my 2 cents here...

Here's some of my tactical rules I live by for UT.

Rule #0, Don't have a bad connection: Lagging sucks.

Rule #1, Know how to aim your gun: If you can't aim properly, then nothing else matters, you're gonna lose.

Rule #2, Know the maps: Knowing the maps is key. This will allow you to know all the routes, exits, terrain/cover, area names, etc.

Rule #3, Know how to move/jump properly: Jumping/moving properly makes you faster and a harder target to hit.

Rule #4, Have experience: This allows you to determine good strategy and make good tactics. This is especially helpful in team matches.

Rule #5, Situational awareness: Look at your mini-map, utilize your sound as to hear enemies, etc.

Rule #6, Be a team player: Med others, help outnumbered team mates, and know that sometimes you must sacrifice yourself to win the match.

Rule #7, Know your limits: Inversely, sometimes it's better not to help outnumbered team mates, as you might just end up wasting your life as well.

Rule #8, Have fun: If the game stops being fun, stop playing the game.

1. When moving don't just aim in front of you, keep your crosshairs on where you expect the nearest enemy to be the whole time you're moving.
2. Smoke grenades are only good for two things: pissing people off and ninja escape attempts
3. Always find a safe place to reload, if you run out of ammo in the middle of a gunfight just switch guns
4. Plan. Have goals and strategy based off opposing players instead of just running around shooting at everything that moves.
5. When sniping try to move positions after every 1-2 shots
6. Helmets save you, Kevlar vests just slow you down.
7. Use automatic guns on bots
