No, I don't think the age is the problem. It has superb graphics and ui (unless you're talking about 1.6). However, in both 1.6 and source the gameplay really just bored me. The whole match you and ur teammates camp up in a choke point, and that's all the game is.
If you wanna go p2p I would go with something unique. Try mount and blade warband. I'm prolly gunna buy it when I get a new computer, but it doesn't require a good rig to play.
