Nice to see another Archer!
Mine is Arch Linux with DWM (with additional patches), my own bash status piped into DWM's statusbar, heavily-customised Firefox (I like to compile things 8)), and of course my server script. 8) No icons or clicky menus, just dmenu and a load of keybinds.

Nice! I've always had respect for the lightweight WM users. I used to be a Fluxbox guy, myself, but have gotten lazy in my later years with hacking config files. I chose Xfce after seeing all the stuff they finally got working in 4.6.2 and think it's a decent compromize between featurset and lightweight-hackability. Plus it still has the right click menu, which was a "must have" for me coming from Fluxbox.

I've been fiddling with PekWM with PyPanel lately, because I get bored occasionally and like to see if any non-tiling WMs can match up to the might of tiling. Back when I used to use Fluxbox, someone told me that "once you go tiling, you never go stack" lol.
Took me a few goes to get DWM working nice but I've had it ever since. PekWM looks quite nice, but these days I find things like window decorations and desktop menus unnecessary. Common apps are keybound, and there's dmenu for everything else. It's by the same people as DWM, and all it does is makes a horizontal list of programs across the top of your screen, you just start typing the name of the app and it reduces the number of options accordingly. Highlight then hit enter :) Or just open a terminal and use "&" and "disown" 8)
Title: Re: Post your desktop
Post by: SlimPickins on September 17, 2010, 07:30:27 PM
Cool, yeah I haven't really found a WM since Fluxbox that's really gotten me intrigued enough to spend the time getting it setup and learning the quirks. However, after reading your earlier post, I went and installed Awesome (offshoot of DWM I believe), just to see what this tiling craze was all about, and I have to admit that I quite enjoyed the ride. Tiling is intriguing to me, primarly because it's "different."

All the other WMs I've been messing with (*box, fvwm, etc) are cool in their own way, but none have really given me good reason not to just use a lightweight DE like Xfce. I'll probably keep Awesome installed and tinker with it further just to have something different to mess around with.

Dude how can you have such a low-res wallpaper?!

Pickins, I know many people on the Arch IRC channels that have a bittersweet relationship with Awesome because the dev(s) kept changing the way the configs worked and everyone had to keep rewriting their configs to keep up with the changes. I dunno if that's still the way but you might wanna check before you spend ages configuring it!

Nice, now that's a total hacker desktop. I really need to get into this tiling business. I've been paying too much attention to the likes of Xfwm and Openbox.... which at one point I thought made me cool (compared to Gnome and KDE users), but you and KD have put me in my place. I'm not the Jedi I should be...

Well done on getting awesomewm working, but no you don't 8) Too many GUI apps! If you're interested in CLI apps, try Irssi or Weechat instead of XChat (I never saw the point of GUI apps for IRC) and try MOC, CMus or MPD for music! Oh and look up the .Xdefaults file for changing your terminal colours. 8)

Also, is that Comic Sans as your default font?!

No, Macs are not Linux-based. Both have their roots in Unix but they're not the same.
You need to extract the files yourself, it should be in the right click menu.

Linux came from Minix not Unix, and OSX has a BSD OS called Darwin, which is arguably not from Unix either.  :P

I meant "Unix-like" Captain Pedantic >:D
What does Linux take from Minix? Minix is a microkernel as opposed to the Linux monolithic kernel. Or are you talking about Minix+userland compared to GNU/Linux? That microkernel is certainly interesting, I read into it a bit and they're essentially saying that it's uncrashable. 8)

Hi marvin, i was just wondering, do you know how to set up urban terror for ubuntu? Ubuntu and mac use linux so i thought you know it. I tried to download the game for linux users from urt website but when i finish dwl it fails to extract the files.

Im guessing you are in North America so here:

http://www.quakeunity.com/file=2585 (http://www.quakeunity.com/file=2585)  or   http://dls.urt.voxel.net/q3ut4/UrbanTerror_41_FULL.zip (http://dls.urt.voxel.net/q3ut4/UrbanTerror_41_FULL.zip)

download the files, use Terminal to go to the file location, do a md5check on it ( md5: 1370306ea236f65f595e7ca70765e469), extract em and look for the Linux 32bits executable: ioUrbanTerror.i386 or if you have a 64 architecture look for ioUrbanTerror.x86_64, make it executable (if you dont know how to then here its the GUID based way: right click, then properties-permissions, then click on "allow executing file as program") accept and you should be ready to go.

I DID read your post, perhaps this is not the solution but with the little info i had i cannot think of anything more than redownloading from a (possible different location), checking the md5 and following the same instructions i did - which worked for me- good luck, also i would recommend using the Terminal its better if you practice this stuff there tho.

In Terminal go to the location of your downloaded file and do sudo chmod -x IoUr (press TAB and it will selfcomplete), to check for md5 go to the same location and     $ md5sum ioUrbanTerror.i386. Dont mean to sound condescending explaining such easy to do and find steps but whenever i have asked for help at linux forums and got it explained like this it helped me a lot, if you already had tried these steps and still fails, can you provide more info? its really weird that it doesnt even extracts, do you have a standard Ubuntu install?

Also, heres mine, Linux Mint 9 Isadora, i know its as "noobish" as it gets but im not as pro as KD or Slim hehe and Mint works really nice for me, i DO had a Arch box with XFCE and PuppyLinux but i lent it to my mom since hers melted down and she needed something to work with.

I do not care if this is an old post, I did not feel the need to create a new thread if one already existed, so get over it. hehe
Here is my desktop, and yes I do not keep icons on the desktop, I can not stand clutter.

As for the wallpaper, it was originally called Observe the clouds. [link (http://ivanandreevich.deviantart.com/art/Observe-the-Clouds-44867064)]
I wanted to try to create another water scene using the GIMP [link (http://sta.sh/02aky0hivqx1)], and it turned out as well as the last time I attempted it.  [link (http://cope57.deviantart.com/art/wide-water-210098828)]  I am still having issues trying to make it look more real.  Any tips would be appreciated.  Speaking of tips, here are my Xmarks links for GIMP tutorials. I don't normally have my dock showing, I guess I am the weird one here. The only application I have  constantly visible on my desktop is the Macintosh HD.

My desktop background also changes every 5 minutes in a random rotation. I thought I would show you a few of the more relevant backgrounds.  8)

Oh wow,  I just realized I never posted my Umbrella Corporation wallpaper. I made it a while back, but never submitted it.  Well anyhow, here it is in .png, .xcf, and now for those PhotoShop users .psd.

If you do not want to download the .zip package containing the GIMP and PhotoShop files, the wallpaper is available in two versions.  Feel free to do whatever you want with them.

Maybe I will go through my images on my PC and upload them to deviantART (http://cope57.deviantart.com/) eventually.

loving the umbrella desktops. right now I just have my basic one back since I lost everything I have been busy dealing with just performance customization opposed to things that look nice for now. need to eventually get my rain meter set back up though. I love that thing. so much customization can be done to it to monitor pretty much anything you want to monitor

I really like it when one customizes (http://www.customize.org/) their Windows PC's to be something other than a theme change.
It looks pretty cool.

thanks. I like windows for the most part, but I hate how it looks. that's why I have the selector wheel which is basically off of Mass Effect. once I have it fully programmed since the code I got was just not working at all, I will be fine. I got it mostly working. same with the weather applet I have running. its not working now so I need to find one that works and alter the base code for it to make it look the way I want it to.

also at the moment I have the skins set up for the top buttons, but as of now, most of them are not assigned to any programs or processes. all in time though.

I think half the fun in having a computer is altering everything and adding things to make it your own and to work for you the best you can.

ok....I think im happy with this....combined.....its a TON of different things, created by a lot of different people, mixed, matched, edited by me....I think im finally happy....for now. I played around a bit with some of the looks of some existing things, while mixing things together to monitor what I WANT to monitor in the graphs. I played around with the tool on shepards arm like it was in the game. this one was clearly made by Cerberus though because it has a digital clock as well. (if you played the games you will get that reference)

After a little rain, I was inspired to modify my current wallpaper.

(http://www.zimagez.com/miniature/screenshot-03292013-080532pm.php) (http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/screenshot-03292013-080532pm.php)

I know I can make nearly perfect rain drops... One at a time, but this was an attempt to create an entire surface of rain drops all at once using filters and scripts.

The wallpaper is available for download as an attachment.

I never said I was experiencing frustration. As a matter of fact the face at the end of my post is more of a jovial one. I understand you're just trying to use a snide remark in some kind of clever and witty retort to my post Cope, but in the future try making a post that makes more sense and is better suited to the situation buddy.
